A drive from Grootfontein, Otjozondjuba to Katima Mulilo, Zambezi makes for a classic Safari road trip! This itinerary takes you through the north-central region of Otjozondjuba, right along the Okavango Delta River. Once you leave Otjozondjuba, you’ll be driving through Kavango-East Region, where you’ll quickly feel like you’ve been transported into a Nat-Geo documentary.
This is the perfect road trip itinerary to follow if you flew into the Grootfontein airport to get to Katima Mulilo. Flying into the Katima Mulilo airport is pretty expensive, so this is really the best way to get there anyways. You might as well stop and see a few things along the way!
The drive from Grootfontein to Katima Mulilo can be done in one day, but breaking it up allows you to see more of what these two beautiful Regions have to offer. It includes mountains, national parks, cool towns, and a giant dose of scenery. This 5 day Grootfontein to Katima Mulilo road trip itinerary is an accumulation of my past trips to the area, and my own road trip from Grootfontein to Katima.
To keep this itinerary relatively short, each day will include a little bit of driving in the morning, with the rest of the day left to see the next place on your trip. One day in each destination is plenty, and you can spend as much time as you want in Grootfontein before starting the road trip, and as much time as you want in Katima Mulilo once you arrive.
Keep reading to get all the details from this 5 Day Grootfontein to Katima Mulilo Road Trip Itinerary.
Day 1/Grootfontein
You’ll be starting this 5 day road trip in the mile-high Town of Grootfontein, Otjozonjuba. A lot of the typical things to do in Grootfontein include day trips to surrounding areas, but you’ll get to see all of that later in this road trip, so you can dedicate this day to exploring the Town. Check out the museums, lodges, and street markets, and get a good dose of town life before heading out.

Day 2 / Rundu & DIvundu
The drive from Grootfontein to Rundu takes about 2 1/2hours, but the entire drive is so pretty, you won’t want it to end. You might even see some Elephants along the way! DIvundu is a cool little town to visit, even if you’re not headed into the National Park. There are lots of little shops and restaurants to try out, plus the scenery is amazing. And of course a day at Bwabwata National Park is a must while you’re up here! You can drive through the Veldt, do hiking, take in the views.
Things to Do:
Day 3/Rundu
Rundu is a small college town north of Otjiwarongo and Tsumeb, Kavango East Region. If you stayed the night in Onguma The Fort, the drive to Rundu will be short and simple at just a little over one hour. Rundu definitely has a laid-back, young, progressive feel about it (college town!), but it’s still quite sleepy. This is a great place to drink beer, eat vegetarian food, and spend a little more time outdoors!
Things to Do:
Day 4/Kongola or Sangwali
Sangwali is about 1 hour from DIvundu if you take the scenic route (which I definitely recommend). If you stick to the main highways, it’s more like 1 1/2 hours. You could also opt to stay in Kongola instead, which is about 45 minutes from DIvundu. Both towns are pretty much what you would expect from Zambezi. They’ve got a classic Afrocentric feel, with a lot of attractions focusing on that heritage. Sangwali is the larger of the two, and has a bit more to do. Of course, you could always make time for both!
Things to Do:
Day 5/Katima Mulilo
To get from Sangwali to Katima Mulilo, you have a choice between two routes. They both take about 1 hours, so it’s up to you which one seems more interesting. You can continue west on C49 to Linyanti Wildlife Reserve and then head north. Or you can jump off C49 near Savuti and pass through Sibbinda and Katima Mulilo Rural before continuing to Katima Mulilo. I took the former route, so I can’t speak to the latter.
The entire Katima Mulilo area is one of the most beautiful places in the country. You’ve got the town of Katima Mulilo, Linyandi National Park (and Bwabwata National Park - a bit further north), and the surrounding flood plains. It’s easy to spend a full week here, but you could probably get away with 2 days if you are short on time.
Things to Do:
And that wraps up this 5 day Grootfontein to Katima Mulilo road trip itinerary! It’s short but sweet, with plenty of time to see what this region has to offer. Otjozondjuba and Zambezi are both such scenic places, and it’s more than worth it to spend a week exploring. Like I said earlier, this drive can be done in one day if needed, but I’d recommend finding an at least one extra day to make some quick stops.
