This list has one of the most prominently used and cultivated crops in Namibia it`s i tried to make it as fair as i could justifying the crops angle of supply with regards to locally farmered items and how they adapt to the soils and inconsistent rains.
The No.1 place on this countdown goes to the world number one go to crop the Potato.
Potatoes are popular the world over and Namibia is no exception this crop made it's origin from the Neighbouring Southern African countries, they come in all shapes and seizes and are rotated annually to make space for those breeds who fits the climate conditions every season, they are well suited to the Northern Arid wetlands from the Zambezi down to the Central Highlands where they grown annually.
The No.2 place on this list goes to the most harvest group of crops on the planet the cereals.
Cereal come in a wide variety maize being the popular one and they make-up the stable food source for any country one would argue that the modern world was build on cereals they have come quite far from then coming in a wide variety taking up the huge gap in world trade just like any other country the Namibian government depends enormously on cereals on a regular basis and the rest of it's by products.
The No.3 place is award to a seasonal plant that is more adaptsble to the North of the country the Peas.
Peas are more favourable in the Northern District of of the country and are grown there in high supplies they are usually the type that fits the usually at it's best and farmers highly depend on the rain to have them in stable supplies.
The No.4 place on this list is a crop of an identity like no other the Root Carrot.
Carrots are where a home garden vegetable in Namibia but as the Population grew food portions doubled and new recipes arrived some farmers saw a loop hole in that crop sector and went in all cards raising the price setting the trends and acting as advisors to the new crops of little interest but huge demand.
The occasional but always reliable Pumpkin comes in at No.5
The Pumpkin is a very tricky crop to cultivate in the country the most reason being its high water consumption even though it grows perfectly well throughout the most acceptable soild conditions the country offers but it has a reasonable supply and demand power over the rest of the crops on the list.
The No.6 place on the list is a bean that has been around the country for a while it's the legume beans.
Legume Beans are a die hard bean mostly cooked by the depressed group of the Namibian society it rarely makes it out the village to the shopping shelves of major supermarkets and retailers a meal only for the few who brave into the rural area at the right time of the season would get a taste of this bean they are most often sold in street markets and a huge majority shared among families of the farmers.
At No.7 the vegetable that never runs dry in supplies in the country it often grows like an indigenous plant the Onion.
Onions are very popular in Namibia just like in west Africa and supplies come in stable they are grown locally and sold just about every where the prices are low customers aren't really sceptical about where they come from as long as they are clean and stable they simply are a happy vegetable that seem to have found it's home in Namibia never in low supply and never in high demand.
The regular salad ingredient in Namibia the Cauliflower has a fair placing on this list at No.8.
Cauliflower is occasionally used in open minded and flexible kitchens rarely in traditional cooking with most buyer coming from a certain cultural background usually preferred on weekends and local home events they are a crop that still needs to settle in the Namibian farms and society as a whole despite being a developing country most Namibians are conservative when it comes to new ideas past around the kitchen even when there are no other options around.
The End of year fruit in Namibia known for cooling locals during the Midday heat its the Melons at No.9
The Melons are to Namibia what Turkey and eggnog is to the States they come in plenty in the festive season, and aren't really heard of in the seasons that follow locals look at you with great interest when you consume a slice of Melon during April or August or any suitable time that you find suitable they are in huge demand during they festive season and seasonal farmers flock to thier place of business to sell them off like hot cakes there is no festive season in Namibia without melons.
The Beetroot is a Sunday ingredient to the local lot and it clearly deserves a place on this list at No.10
Beetroots just like cauliflower only have a place in what the west would call conventional kitchens not so popular among the U$2 per day lots they usually prefer solid food stock piles and are detered by food they feel will only last them a day if it's not well refrigerated so farmers usually take on a cautionary tale aproach to those type of crops.
